Control of natural and synthetic instrument sounds

Description of the project / objectives

The project aims to advance the understanding of the control of actual musical instruments and their synthesis by physical modelling, paying particular attention to the link between the parameters of the performance, and the physical and perceptual characteristics of the sounds produced. The project focuses on the study of transient phenomena, which are difficult to study and model in the context of wind instruments. IRCAM teams participating in the project target their work towards the following objectives:

  • A Simplified model of the resonators of wind instruments for their implementation in real time and an implementation of control functions such as inverse problem solving (calculating the necessary changes in performance parameters in order to produce a given recorded sound),
  • The design and implementation of a robot musician, changing existing artificial mouth, allowing not only to perform reproducible measurements of wind instruments with different types of embouchure and excitation patterns, but also likely to be of musical use.
